True Detective: The Long Bright Dark

Archery Season for white tail deee starts in Michigan today. That means for the next 3-4 months I will have more time on my hands than normal. I get to indulge myself in old tv shows. First up is True Detective.

Woody Harrelson plays Detective Marty Hart. He’s a senior detective and family man. He and his partner are very different, but Marty seems to respect him.

Matthew McConaughey is Detective Rust Cohle. He’s known in the department as the tax man because of the meticulous notes he takes at the crime scenes. He doesn’t fit in with the other guys in the department, and doesn’t seem to care.

On January 3rd, 1995, Marty and Rust are dispatched to investigate a murder. The victim, Dora Lang, was found in a field, bound and wearing a crown of antlers. This stirs up everyone in the area due to its unchristian and ritualistic nature.

The storyline bounces between 1995 when the case started to 2012 when two new detectives become concerned about the possibility of a copycat killer. Rust has become a functional alcoholic and hasn’t spoken to Marty in 10 years. He ends the episode telling the new detectives to start asking the correct questions.

I’m watching this season again, because I think I will catch more of the clues this time around. The plot is incredibly involved and graphic. Sometimes it’s hard to keep all the details straight, but I love a show that makes me think.

I’d love for you all to watch along with me. We can discuss episode 2 next week.
