I’m still feeling pretty junkie, but I managed to get some work done. Unfortunately that means that I’m now exhausted and want to make friends with the couch. So now I’m snuggled in watching Singin’ in the Rain.

I’m a sucker for old movies, especially musicals. I never have worry that anything is going to be inappropriate for the kids. And back then, movies weren’t supposed to be representative of real life; they were supposed to be an escape.

I’m pretty sure the characters Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Connor) wanted to escape those suits. They look like someone ordered way too much material for their table cloth and decided to use the extra to make clown suits.

If you’re unfamiliar with the movie, Singin’ in the Rain is about the Hollywood transition from silent pictures to “talkies.” Don Lockwood is primed to handle the changes, because he was a Vaudeville showman before becoming a stuntman and then a star. His costar, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) has a voice that won’t appeal to audiences.

I totally forgot how much I love silent movies. There’s something about feeling the music and becoming encompassed in the emotions that you don’t always get today.

Although I do understand the panic of Kathy Seldon (Debbie Reynolds) when a strange man jumped into her car. Her sassiness is even better. Don tries to sweet talk her, but she tells him she’s doesn’t think he does real acting in his movies.

Of course Kathy isn’t doing a bunch of real acting either. She happens to be a chorus girl who jumps out of the cake at an industry party that Don and Lina are attending. Don gets her all flummoxed and she tries to throw a cake at him, but he ducks and it hits Lina in the face.

Lina responded by getting Kathy fired and declared her persona non grata. So she was furious when she found out that Kathy was going to be her voice on the redubbed musical. Then Lina realized there was an even crueler way for her to get revenge on Kathy, and insisted that she remain the voice of Lina Lamont and nothing else.

But of course that won’t due. So when Lina lip syncs on stage while Kathy sings behind her, Don, Cosmo and the head of the studio pull a Wizard of Oz and reveal who’s really been the voice all along. Lina runs off stage. Don and Kathy share a kiss and a happily ever after.
So what movie is your favorite escape from reality? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
Have a wonderful day.
